Every year, around fifty student teams from five continents spend a week on simulations built around a fictitious armed conflict: they plead, negotiate and advise, as lawyers, military officers, diplomats and humanitarian actors.

What is the Competition?

The Jean-Pictet Competition is a one-week course in international humanitarian law, created in 1989 and held every year in a different host city. It is entirely oral: there are no written memorials. Teams take on the roles of an armed conflict’s actors — legal advisers, ICRC delegates, military officers, diplomats — in simulations built around a fictitious scenario.
